Hailstorm coupled with strong winds wreaked havoc on the crops of Sarlahi and Rautahat districts of Province 2 on Tuesday morning. The storm also blew away the roofs of some houses in the districts.
Hundreds of farmers have been affected as the hailstorm destroyed ready-to-harvest wheat and legumes.
“The hailstorm coupled with gale destroyed our crops. Our investment and hard work were all blown away,” lamented Niraj Sah, a local farmer of Barhathawa Municipality-2 in Sarlahi.
According to the District Police Office in Sarlahi, no human casualty has been reported so far but there was a huge damage to property. The police said that they are assessing the damage caused by the hailstorm and wind.
The southern part of Sarlahi witnessed hailstorm on Monday night as well, damaging crops and houses. Power supply in several places in the district has been disrupted, as many electricity poles were uprooted by the winds on Monday and Tuesday.
Similarly in Rautahat, the windstorm along with hailstones damaged scores of houses and crops. Several settlements of Debahi Gonahi and Brindaban municipalities were hit hardest in the incident.
Dharmendra Patel, mayor of Debahi Gonahi, told the Post that the windstorm ripped apart the roofs of many houses in the local unit. “Most of the houses with thatched and tiled roofs were damaged in the incident.
The hailstorm also damaged crops in the area, incurring huge losses for the farmers,” said Patel.
