Nikhil Singh bowled effectively and returned to make some crucial contribution with the bat as Province 2 defeated Sudurpaschim Province by four wickets to claim the Manmohan Memorial U-16 National cricket tournament on Tuesday.
Electing to bat first at the Tribhuvan University Stadium, Sudurpaschim’s batting once again revolved around their key opening batsman and captain Suwash Ayer whose half century partnership with Sandeep Bist led the team to 133-9 in 30 overs. Province 2 got a solid start through Rohan BK and then got crucial contributions from Singh and Bishal Patel to reach 136-6 in 26.3 overs. Along with the title, Province 2 received a cash purse of Rs 250,000 and cricket goods, while Sudurpaschim got Rs 125,000 along with cricket goods. Sudurpaschim skipper Ayer was named player-of-the-series for his 209 runs and nine wickets.
BK laid the foundation for Province 2 chase after he shared 57 runs for the first wicket with Sheikh Imran (14). BK played a solid knock of 21-ball 36 hitting three each sixes and fours. The 57 without loss then turned 78-5 after Aashish Bhatta took three wickets but Singh and Patel resurrected the Province 2 innings with a 41-run sixth wicket partnership with Patel. Man-of-the-final Singh made 27 off 47 deliveries with three hits to the fence and Patel struck a 27-ball 28 not out with three boundaries. Govind Bist and Sachin Badayak also took a wicket each for Sudurpaschim.
Earlier, Patel picked up two quick wickets removing opener Arun Mahara and Dhirendra Thakur for ducks reducing Sudurpaschim to 1-2. Ayer led the recovery with a 77-run third wicket partnership with Sandeep Bist. Singh then removed both set batsmen in a space of seven runs as Province 2 hit back in the game. Bist was first to go for a 50-ball 28 that included five boundaries and Ayer scored 47 off 54 with seven boundaries. Bhatta chipped in 21 off 28 hitting one boundary. Singh (3-23) and Patel (3-31) shared six wickets between them for Province 2.
Province 3’s Aaish Bhattarai was named the best batsman for his 120 runs including a half century. His teammate and captain Deepak Bohora took the best bowler’s honour with eight wickets to his name. Bhargav Chataut, also from Province 3, was named the emerging player of the tournament.
