Amateur golfer Subash Tamang opened up a two-stroke lead in the second round of Surya Nepal Premier Golf Championships on Tuesday.
Tamang shot second consecutive three-under 69 at the par-72 Gokarna Golf Club to climb atop the leaderboard with a total score of six-under 138. Overnight leader Jayaram Shrestha dropped to second along with another amateur Sukra Bahadur Rai at four-under 140. Shrestha carded even-par 72 while Rai returned with the day’s best card of six-under 66.
Ramesh Adhikari shot five-under 67 for a total of three-under 141. Bhuwan Nagarkoti and Dhana Bahadur Thapa were tied at two-under 142. Nagarkoti shot five-under 67 and Thapa carded three-under 69. Sanjok Moktan, who shot a 70, and amateur Tanka Bahadur Karki, who carded even-par 72, were next at one-under 143.
Rame Magar (73), Bikash Adhikari (73) and Surya Prasad Sharma (74) were in a group of three tied at even-par 144. Amateur Tashi Tshiring shot even-par 72 for a total of one-over 145. Deepak Magar (73), amateur Binod Tamang (74), Krishna Man Rajbahak (76) and Chuda Bahadur Bhandari (76) were at two-over 146.
Tamang shot two-under 34 on the front nine with an eagle on the third and a birdie on the sixth against a bogey on the fifth. On his way back, Tamang sank another eagle on the 15th and a birdie on 11th against bogeys on the 14th and 17th holes for one-under 35. Rai shot three-under 33 on the front nine with birdies on the third, fourth, seventh and ninth holes against a bogey on eighth. On the back nine, Rai had an eagle on the 11th, added birdies on the 12th and 14th but dropped a shot on the 15th for three-under 33.
The first round leader Shrestha carded even-par 36 on both the sides. Shrestha made birdies on the fourth, ninth, and 12th against bogeys on the third, eighth and 13th holes.
Adhikari shot four-under 32 on the front nine with a bogey on the first and birdies on the third, fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth holes. On the back nine, Adhikari sank birdies on the 13th, 15th and 17th against bogeys on the 14th and 17th for one-under 35 card.
Nagarkoti sank birdies on the first, second, third, fifth and ninth holes for five-under 31 on the first half. On the back nine, Nagarkoti sank a birdie on 10th but dropped a shot on the 16th hole for an even-par 36. Thapa carded a bogey-free 69 with birdies on the seventh, eighth and 11th holes.
Amateur Karki shot four-under 32 on the front nine with birdies on the first, second, fourth and seventh holes. On his way back, Karki dropped shots on the 13th and 14th holes as well as a double-bogey on the 15th for a four-over 40. Moktan carded one-under 35 on each half.
He sank birdies on the third, seventh, 12th and 13th against bogeys on the sixth and 15th holes.
In all, 28 pros and nine amateurs survived the cut, which fell at 11-over 151. A total of 40 professionals and 20 amateurs played over the first two rounds of the ninth and final event of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2018-19. The tournament offers Rs 1.26 million in total prize money.
The eventual champion will receive Rs 230,000, runner-up will get Rs 140,000 and the third-place professional will earn Rs 95,000.
