Gurung's doubel-double boosts Police's playoff chances

Bikash Gurung produced a double-double lifting Nepal Police Club to the third spot of the Nepal Basketball League and a probably spot in the top four spots for playoffs.

In their away match against Kirtipur Basketball Team, Gurung netted 22 points and took 10 rebounds handing Police an easy 84-60 victory. Having played 10 games, NPC are tied on 16 points with Budhanilkantha Municipality Basketball Team and Golden Gate International Club but stay third on better score difference. The fourth and fifth placed teams have played 11 games each.

Unbeaten Times International Club currently lead the table with 20 points and behind them are Tribhuvan Army Club on 19 with both teams playing 10 games each. The eighth defeat in their 10th game have almost knocked out Kirtipur from the double round robin league. They are sixth in the table ahead of South Siders Basketball Club (11) and Royal Basketball Club (10).

After stunning NPC in their away game when they needed double Over Time to win 88-86 in a May 8 game, the youthful Kirtipur did well in the opening minutes at their home court. NPC gradually found their feet to lead the first quarter 23-13. The departmental side began to dominate the game and at one stage built a 20-point lead at 37-17 with 4:32 remaining in the second quarter.

Kirtipur fought back hard to cut the gap to seven points as NPC headed into the second half with 42-29 advantage. A three-pointer from Aashish Maharjan helped Kirtipur cut the lead back to seven points at 52-45 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. NPC then converted their next three possessions to seize the initiative back for a 59-46 lead in the penultimate quarter.

Any Kirtipur hopes of a comeback evaporated in the final quarter where NPC netted 25 and the hosts managed just 14. Gurung, who sunk four three-pointers, also had three assists and one steal in the game. Bimal Jung Karki scored 17, while Prasang Dhoj Maskey chipped in 16. Suraj Khadgi scored 15 points for Kirtipur.

Police will next host Budhanilkantha in their 11th game in a crucial match in Dhubarahi for playoffs, while leaders Times will look to stretch their 10-match unbeaten run with the match against lowly Royal in Charkhaal.
