Jul 8, 2019-
Two men are missing and feared dead in Saturday night’s flood that also swept away a house and a suspension bridge in Marming Hyangle, Sindhupalchok.
Yadav Prasad Kafle and Ramautar Chaudhary, the employees of Shivashree Hydropower Project, are missing after flood waters from the Marming Hyangle stream swept away their living quarters, police said.
Search is on for the missing men. A search team on Sunday recovered a body near the dam site of Sunkoshi Hydropower Project, but police could not immediately verify the identity of the deceased.
“Security personnel from Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been deployed to the disaster-hit site for search and damage assessment,” Police Inspector Yadav Thapa said.
Two other men, Kami Tamang and Pemba Thokyal, who were injured in the incident were airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment on Sunday.
Heavy rainfall on Saturday has increased the flood threat in settlements close to the Bhotekoshi river.
The concerned people, who are beset by the fear of floods every monsoon, say the rainfall on Saturday has raised the water level in the Bhotekoshi river, causing it to erode the embankment at Liping, Tatopani, Lodari, Dashkilo, Chaku Bazaar and Jambu.
“Like every rainy season, we are scared that the floodwaters might enter our homes,” said Shiva Bahadur Shrestha of Chaku Bazaar. “Chaku Bazaar and its adjoining areas are at high risk of flood as the embankment is not strong enough to withstand the pressure of flooded Bhotekoshi.”
The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation has issued a flood alerts in several river across the country.
The ministry warned that the water levels in the various rivers in the districts including Dadeldhura, Doti, Kailali, Kanchanpur, Bardiya, Banke, Dang, Surkhet, Dailekh, Jajarkot and Achham could rise from Sunday onwards. It also urged farmers to harvest the crops planted on the river sides by July 13.
