Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is likely to embark on a five-day state visit to China beginning June 19—his second foreign visit since assuming office on February 15.Top officials at the Foreign Ministry told the Post that the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu on May 17 had formally proposed the PM’s visit to the northern neighbour and both sides subsequently agreed that June 19 would be an appropriate time for PM Oli to go on the visit.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is embarking on a state visit to China in June after presentation of the federal budget on May 29. PM Oli, who advocates a balanced and independent foreign policy and a good neighbourhood policy, visited India in April. As Oli tours China next month, agreements reached during his visit to Beijing in 2016 are expected to be expedited.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and visiting Indian PM Narendra Modi have agreed to resolve selected outstanding issues by September 19, the day the constitution was promulgated in Nepal in 2015. PM Oli made this pledge during a joint address with his Indian counterpart after delegation-level talks here on Friday.Foreign secretaries of both the countries would take initiatives to resolve the issues, said Oli. According to officials, except for political matters and those currently discussed at the Eminent Persons’ Group on Nepal-India relations, various other matters being taken up by technical committees would be resolved by the date.

As Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins his third visit to Nepal on Friday in four years, there is cautious optimism in general public and at the political level given a dip in bilateral relations after India imposed a five-month border blockade expressing dissatisfaction over the constitution promulgation process in 2015. India was displeased with Nepal’s new constitution and only “noted” its adoption in September that year.
