Biratnagar faces blood shortage
Nov 2, 2012-The Regional Blood Transfusion Centre of the Nepal Red Cross Society in Biratnagar is facing a shortage of blood. The centre lacks all groups of blood except A+ and O+. To add to the worsening situation, storage of A+ and O+ blood lasts only for a week, according to officials at the centre.
The centre said it will run out of all types of blood groups within a few weeks as there are no any blood donation programmes set at present. “People have not donated blood due to festivals but the demand for blood is as usual, creating its scarcity,” an official said.
The centre held a blood donation programme around one-and-a-half months ago. The official said that the demand for blood is higher in Morang as the number of public and private health institutions is increasing in the district lately. Thirty to 50 pints of blood is supplied from the centre on a daily basis.
