Frequent calls suggest intimacy between Thapa and Bhattarai

- POST REPORT, Kathmandu

Nov 2, 2012-

Police have found that DSP Basant Kumar Thapa had a telephone conversation with Constable Pabitra Bhattarai an hour before he hanged himself on Tuesday evening.

Bhattarai, who was stationed at the Control Room of the Metropolitan Police Range, Lalitpur, too killed herself at her rented room in Dhobighat two days after Thapa’s death.

Police have recovered photos of DSP Thapa and Bhattarai together from the latter’s room, revealing a close relationship between them.

“Our investigation has shown they were in a relationship for a long time,” said SSP Rajendra Man Shrestha, chief at the Range.

The call details studied after their suicides found that over 200 exchanges were made betweenthe two in the last 15 days and several phone contacts happened even from the Control Room.

Police have reached a conclusion that their relationship bloomed while they were posted in Khotang. Bhattarai was transferred to Jhapa and later Lalitpur a few months ago. He was in Kathmandu for training at the Police Battalion, Naxal, on UN peacekeeping.

Thapa, who left his house at 5pm on Tuesday, was found four hours later hanging from a tree in a nearby wood in Gokarna. Bhattarai, who left office on Thursday afternoon saying she was ill, was found dead in her room.
