Sherpa edge RCT on penalties
Nov 2, 2012-
Himalayan Sherpa Club (HSC) advanced to the quarter-finals of the second Safal Pokhara Cup after overcoming Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT) in a penalty shootout on Friday.
After regulation time and extra time failed to produce a single goal, the match moved on to penalties.
Himalayan Sherpa were clinical from the spot as they converted all five of their kicks. RCT were also on par with HSC until the fifth penalty. Up stepped Naresh KC to take the crucial penalty, knowing that a miss would send his team packing.
The pressure seemed to get the better of KC as his shot was palmed away by HSC keeper Binay Shrestha to give his team the victory.
Earlier on, both teams were below their level best as they failed to show any sort of flair in attack. Opportunities were few, and when opportunities came the finishing was poor. The closest any side came to breaking the deadlock was in the 62nd minute when Deepesh Thapa Magar of RCT bicycle-kicked the ball towards goal. His shot smacked against the cross bar and was eventually cleared.
Later on, HSC coach Meghraj KC said that he was satisfied with his players’ performance. “We worked hard and we deserve the victory. Our performance in front of goal was a bit disappointing and we need to work on that.”
