Purbanchal Distillery sealed for tax fraud
Jun 17, 2013-The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) sealed Purbanchal Distillery in Duhabi, Sunsari on Sunday on the charge of cheating the government out of millions of rupees in excise duty by using fake tax stickers. Gopal Koirala, chief of the Inland Revenue Office (IRO), Biratnagar, said they shut down the liquor factory after it was found using fake stickers on dozens of its brands. According to the IRD, the factory has been found using phony stickers on VIP Mocks and Special Black for years. The IRD had been telling the IRO to raid the factory as it had been suspected of being involved in malpractice. The IRD conducted the swoop on its own after the IRO didn’t do anything. During the raid on Sunday, the team found the factory using fake stickers on about 75 percent of its products. According to an IRD source, they sealed the factory in nine segments. The source claimed that the factory had been found to be bribing IRO officials and local aNo rebound in liquor sales despite wedding seasondministration officials to sell alcohol with fake stickers. The factory owner Rajendra Sah has disappeared after the raid by the IRD.
