Landless demand land ownership certificates
Apr 25, 2014-
Landless people from four VDCs in Morang district gheraoed the District Administration Office on Friday, demanding that they should be provided land ownership certificates of the land they have been tilling for long.
They also submitted a memorandum to the prime minister through Assistant Chief District Officer Prem Prasad Luitel. Jaharman Limbu, coordinator of a struggle committee for the landless, said they resorted to the move as concerned authorities tried to evict them by distributing land ownership certificates of the land to influential people.
They accused the Landless Squatters’ Problem Resolution Commission (LSPRC) of distributing land ownership certificates to people with access to power. Limbu said 20,000 landless people have been living in some VDCs, including Sanishchare, Pathari, Bayarban and Hasanda, for the past 34 years.
“We have made the forest land cultivable with our hard work. However, the authorities concerned have started distributing land ownership certificates to others,” he said, adding that though they submitted a memorandum to the prime minister and the land reform minister on March 18, their problems are yet to be addressed.
He warned of strong protest from May 6 if their demands are not met.
