May 5, 2014-
The Chidipani Community Forest Users’ Group of Baldeng Gadhi VDC-7 in Palpa district has distributed metal roof to the economically downtrodden families of the village from a portion of the income generated from the forest resources.
Thirty-one families received corrugated iron sheets to keep their huts dry during the rainy season and protect them from fire, said Hum Bahadur Somere, the chairperson of the forest users’ group.
Uday Bahadur Bishwo-karma, whose hut was destroyed in a fire last year, said he has replaced the thatched roofing of his hut with the metal sheets. “My family feel much comfortable living under a metal roof now. They know the roof will not catch fire as easily, nor leak during the monsoon.”
Another recipient of metal sheets, Lal Kumar BK thanked the forest users group for supporting the impoverished community members. “I am grateful to be a part of this committee,” BK declared. “I wouldn’t have been able afford to install metal roof in my home without the help from the forest users’ group.”
Somere said they had spent Rs 805,000 to purchase the metal sheets; each household received an aid worth Rs 25,825. Solar panels were also installed in seven houses.
According to Narayan Khadka, secretary of the forest users’ group, they had also been spending the income from the forest on schools, drinking water project, irrigation and road construction, among others.
The forest users’ group which was formed 30 years ago manages the forest spread over 177 hectares located about 65 kilometres south-west from the district headquarters, Tansen. Every year, the forest users’ group has been using 25 percent of the income from the forest for forest management and the rest in development works.
