Anaemia ‘widespread’ in western Tarai

Health workers have warned that anaemia is widespread in Banke, Bardiya, Dang, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts and the situation may go from bad to worse if efforts are not initiated to control it immediately. A 14-year-old freed Kamlari of Dang died of the disease around two months ago while being treated at the Bheri Zonal Hospital in Nepalgunj.
According to the hospital, 300 people from the districts were found to be suffering from the disease in the past one year alone. Doctors, however, said more than 1,000 people might be suffering from the disease.
Officials at the Banke District Public Health Office (DPHO) said they apprised the Health Ministry of the situation and that the ministry assured of running a campaign to control the disease and provide free treatment to the patients. DPHO chief Jiban Kumar Malla. He also said they zonal hospital is forced to send sample of blood of the patients to TU Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu for test as it lacks laboratory.
