BRB to join CC on conclave condition

May 17, 2014-

A Baburam Bhattarai supporter has said the Bhattarai faction of the UCPN (Maoist) is ready to compromise on its terms to join the Central Committee if party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal agrees to announce the date for a ‘special general convention.’

At a meeting on Saturday, Bhattarai is said to have told Dahal that the convention would be the best platform to settle the differences between the two factions.

Bhattarai said the party’s immediate priority should be to promulgate a constitution from the Constituent Assemb-ly, and party’s ideological and political differences should be settled through the convention within a year. Dahal, however, said that it is not possible to announce the date for the general convention as the party has just completed the national convention to shake-up its organisation.

In February 2013, the party held its general convention after a hiatus of 22 years, but the Bhattarai faction is demanding another jamboree to settle the intra-party differences. Leaders of the Dahal faction say it is not possible to hold convention every year.

“We are ready to join the CC, dropping other conditions till the general convention. The chairman seems positive on our demands, but there has not been substantial progress,” said Devendra Poudel, a leader close to Bhattarai.

The Bhattarai faction is calling for a new leadership that is collective and decentralised, ending Dahal’s monopoly. “There should a mechanism to express our views in party platforms,” said Poudel. But Dahal is trying to avoid general convention, promising posts in office bearers and standing committee for Bhattarai loyalists.

Bhattarai has told Dahal that his supporters will join the CC if the convention date is fixed. But Bhattarai supporters have ruled out the idea. “We are pressing him [Bhattarai] to join the CC because it is meaningless to remain in the CC without him,” Poduel said. With the developments, the party has postponed its CC meeting.
