TU publishes FSU election schedule
May 17, 2014-
Tribhuvan University has published the schedule for the Free Student Union election notwithstanding the warning issued by several student unions to boycott and foil the poll. After deferring the poll for three times in a year, TU has now decided to conduct the poll on June 1 in over 400 colleges across the country.
According the schedule, the student unions who wish to participate in the election will have to register by May 22. The final list of the voters will also be published on the same day. The nomination letter from both first-past-the-post and proportional categories will be distributed on May 23, and the candidates will have to file their nomination on May 25. The complaints against the candidates can be lodged till noon on May 26, and the list of the candidates will be out at 5 pm the same day.
Those who wish to withdraw their candidacy can apply to the election committee of the concerned colleges on May 27. The final list of the candidates will be made public on the very day.
TU is preparing to hold the biennial election after a five-year hiatus, though the uncertainty about the poll taking place persists as 19 student unions have demanded the TU authority to reschedule the election on the date agreed by all student unions.
Student unions led by UCPN (Maoist) affiliated All Nepal National Independent Student Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) have blamed the TU administration for working on the behest of the student unions close to ruling Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML.
“We will boycott and disrupt the election that was announced unilaterally by the TU,” said Himal Sharma, chairperson of ANNISU-R.
They have asked TU to resolve the differences on electoral system before declaring new election date. While the NC backed Nepal Student Union is advocating for the direct election, other student bodies, mainly those close to the Maoist and Madhesh-based parties, have been demanding proportional system.
