EC turns down SSP’s transfer

- POST REPORT, Kathmandu

May 30, 2014-

The Election Commission on Friday rejected the government’s request for approval to transfer SSP Ramesh Kharel from Metropolitan Police Range, Hanumandhoka, to the Police Headquarters.

A meeting of the EC board turned down the plea citing the election code of conduct that is in effect for the June 22 Constituent Assembly by-polls. “We wrote to the Ministry of Home Affairs stating electoral laws and procedures in detail,” said EC Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav. Earlier, the Code of Conduct Monitoring Committee had forwarded the matter to the EC board after failing to resolve it on its own.

The ministry registered a letter with the EC on May 27 seeking permission for Kharel’s deputation to the headquarters following his controversial remarks at a public forum. SSP Kharel had accused his seniors (DIGs) of lobbying with politicians to get promotion. The government needs prior permission from the EC to appoint, promote and transfer a government official once the election code of conduct is enforced.
