Jun 1, 2014-
The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority on Sunday filed a case against seven top Purbanchal University officials including Vice-chancellor Maheshwor Man Shrestha on corruption charges.
The anti-graft body dragged PU Registrar Niroj Pandey and Exam Controller Mohan Bahadur Basnet to the Special Court accusing them of embezzling millions of rupees from the state coffers during their tenure.
Law Faculty Dean Shambhu Prasad Koirala, then Dean of the Institute of Medicine Shuva Narayan Pathak, Management Faculty Dean Shyam Bahadur Katwal and assistant Dean of the Institute of Science and Technology Rajesh Kumar Jha are other office bearers named in the charge sheet of financial irregularities worth Rs 42.28 million.
The CIAA states that the VC and other officials did not recover Rs 10.23 million in the current fiscal year. Around Rs 2.95 million was misused while providing affiliations.
The CIAA has sought fine, damages for property loss and maximum possible penalty for the accused.
In the first week of April, PU officials were suspended. They were taken into CIAA custody last week after they did not initiate efforts to recover the incurred loss. CIAA spokesman Shreedhar Sapkota said all those accused in the scam were presented before the court for filing the case. The arrestees are now in judicial custody.
The CIAA had initiated a probe after the PU honchos were suspected of receiving millions in bribe while granting affiliations to nursing and management as well as humanities and social science colleges.
Embezzlement was sensed while procuring construction materials too.
