Experts deliberate on higher education issues

The Trailokya Nath Upraity (TN) Centre for Education at Kathmandu University, in cooperation with the UNESCO Office in Kathmandu, organised the “Expert Group Meeting on Higher Education in Nepal” in the Capital from June 6-7.
The main purpose of the meeting was to deliberate on the current situation of higher education and major issues faced in its development in the country, and generate viable and practical solutions for improving the existing situation, the statement read.
Around 40 participants including academicians, senior representatives of the Education Ministry, National Planning Commission and University Grants Commission discussed on pertinent issues related to quality, financing and governance in higher education.
The meeting chaired by former Vice-Chairman of National Planning Commission Shankar Sharma, was jointly inaugurated by KU Vice-chancellor Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha and former TU vice-chancellor Kamal Krishna Joshi. Kathmandu University founder vice-chancellor Suresh Raj Sharma presented a paper on “Governance of Higher Education”, while TN Centre Director Kedar Nath Shrestha presented a comprehensive paper focusing on governance and quality of higher education. The main speaker on “Financing of Higher Education” session, former chief secretary Iswar Prasad Upadhaya, emphasised on clear policy on financing higher education.
