Construction of a six-lane road in Pokhara from Zero kilometre to Brindabasini on the Pokhara-Baglung (Bhupi Sherchan) Highway has started. Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Management Bimalendra Nidhi inaugurated laid the foundation stone on Thursday.

Pokhara Division Road Office (DRO) has taken the initiative for the construction of the 3km road with an estimated investment of Rs 134 million. Stating that additional budget was needed for the expansion of the bridge over Phirke Khola, DRO chief Prabhat Kumar Jha opined the six-lane road would be worthless without expanding the bridge.

“There are three petrol pumps, electricity and telephone cables, and water pipes along the stretch that has to be removed immediately,” Jha said, adding they have written to authorities concerned for its removal. “We hope the pump and house owners will cooperate with us,” said Jha, adding as the structures lay within the “right of way”, the concerned must remove the structures on their own.

Meanwhile, terming the expansion positive, Ananda Raj Mulmi, former chairperson of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Pokhara, said the construction should be completed before work starts on the Regional International Airport.

locals said the expansion of the road, constructed under the Chinese assistance in 2050 BS, would come as a huge relief as it is one of the busiest roads.
