‘School libraries remain ineffective’

Jul 15, 2014-

Amid government’s announcement to establish libraries in all of the public schools this fiscal year, several libraries in schools across the country have remained ineffective, states a study by the Western Regional Education Directorate.

“Many libraries in schools are found to be lacking enough textbooks and are mismanaged, operating irregularly,” said Ishwori Prasad Pokharel, regional deputy director of the education directorate. The study concluded that many parents and students were found not have developed reading habits.

The education directorate conducted the study in libraries of 48 secondary schools in seven western districts with an aim to developing the learning and teaching capacities among students and parents. Teachers, students and parents were interviewed during the study.
