Govt shows urgency to drain dammed lake
Aug 10, 2014-
The government has asked the Nepal Army to take all necessary measures to swiftly drain the landslide-dammed lake in Sunkoshi river. A high-level meeting of Central Natural Disaster Committee chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bam Dev Gautam on Sunday decided to form a panel under Director General of Nepal Army’s Directorate of National Development and Security (DNDS) Gen Baldev Mahat to coordinate the effort, an informed source said.
The NA team has carried out 30 controlled blasts in a bid to drain the water from the dam without much success due to huge volume of debris.
“If the DNDS does not succeed in its mission, the meeting has decided to seek help from neighbouring countries,” said Yadav Koirala, Chief of Natural Disaster Division at the Home Ministry said.
Similarly, the meeting also formed a committee headed by Minister for Urban Development Narayan Khadka for brining out an integrated plan for displaced people in the landslide and offer suggestions to rehabilitate them. The meeting also decided to reopen the Arniko highway as soon as possible.
