Landslips pose threat to Sankhuwasabha villages
Aug 10, 2014-
Settlements at Tamkhu, Bala, Sisuwakhola, Yaphu and Mangtewa VDCs in the district are exposed to the risk of landslides. Local resident Tula Bahadur Kulung said landslips triggered by rains have occurred in various places in the area, posing threats to around 3,000 families in the settlements.
Bala VDC Secretary Netra Bahadur Shrestha said 564 families in Bala and more than 150 families of Susuwakhola VDC-2, 5 and 6 are exposed to the risk. While local school, health post and VDC building at risk, the land and houses of the affected families have developed cracks, he said.
He added that residents of Yachamkha of Tamku VDC-8 are living in temporary huts in nearby areas for safety.
Meanwhile, some families of Tamkhu have moved to safer places. The affected families have demanded that they should be relocated at the earliest. One hundred and fifty eight families in the area were displaced due to a landslide last year. Likewise, a landslip had killed 13 people in the area five years ago. A report submitted by an all-party committee, which reached the incident site to asses the disaster last year, states that hundreds of people may be at risk of being swept away if alternative measures are not adopted immediately. The committee also suggested managing resettlement of the affected families.
