Dalits demand proportional representation in state bodies
Aug 22, 2014-
Dalit rights activists have called for fully proportional representation system as electoral model to be adopted in new constitution arguing this is only the way to secure representation of marginalised groups.
During an interaction with the Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee of the Constituent Assembly on Friday, they also demanded a constitutional provision of reservation for Dalits at all tiers of governance—centre, state and local. Rights activist Binod Pahadi said if parties agree to go for mixed electoral system, there should be a reserved constituency for Dalits. He also demanded representation of Dalits at constitutional bodies and Cabinet. Another rights activist Padam Sundas argued that there should be provision of compensation for historical discrimination to the Dalits.
