NMA threatens stir over secretary apptt

- POST REPORT, Kathmandu

Aug 23, 2014-

The Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has threatened to stop the services in government hospitals if the appointment of Shanta Bahadur Shrestha to the secretary post at the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) is not withdrawn by Monday.

The NMA doctors have demanded that the secretary position should be given to a candidate with a medical background. They have been staging a sit-in outside the ministry building to press their demand.

A Cabinet meeting had decided to appoint Shrestha the secretary at the MoHP on Thursday. Shrestha was transferred from the Ministry of Local Development. The NMA has claimed that appointment is against the spirit of the Health Service Act.

NMA President Dr Anjani Kumar Jha said talks held at the MoHP to discuss Shrestha’s appointment on Saturday ended inconclusively. “We are clear about our demand. The government has to review its decision,” said Dr Jha.

He added that Health Minister Khagaraj Adhikari is positive about the NMA’s demand.

Following the amendment of the Health Service Act in 2006, the secretary post at the MoHP was held by Dr Nirakar Man Shrestha, Dr Dirgha Singh Bam (acting), Dr Sudha Sharma and Dr Praveen Mishra respectively.
