Landslide kills 3, two injured

Three persons were killed and two others went missing when a mudslide swept away a house at Baramchi VDC-1 in the district on Monday noon. The deceased have been identified as Mahadev Thapa, 19, Ganeshkumari Thapa, 38, and Chandrawati Thapa, 18, while Dambar Bahadur Thapa, 50, and Nir Bahadur Thapa, 60, have been missing.
They were taking belongings such as foodstuffs and cattle to safety, following a police call for evacuation from the landslide-prone area when the disaster occurred.
According to police, 12 families in the area were displaced by the landslip from 200 meters above. The site is 13 kilometres north of Araniko Highway that was disrupted by a massive rock failure in Jure earlier.
One of the victims succumbed to injuries at Sadabahar Hospital. Sunita Khatri, who survived the disaster, said that they were trying to save Dambar Bahadur’s belongings. The houses of Dambar, Karna Bahadur Silwal, Netra Bahadur Thapa and Bhupendra Thapa have been destroyed.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Bharat Bahadur Bohara said the displaced families were relocated to a safer place. Chief District Officer Gopal Prasad Parajuli said teams of Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have been carrying out rescue efforts. The displaced have been given food items.
