Speaker seeks info on Kantipur row

- POST REPORT, Kathmandu

Aug 26, 2014-Speaker Subas Nembang on Tuesday ruled that the government inform Parliament about the obstruction in the distribution of The Kathmandu Post and Kantipur dailies.

The Speaker was responding to lawmakers’ statements in House that the hindrance in the printing and publication of the two newspapers by a trade union is against the principles of press freedom and democracy. “The government should immediately inform the House on the obstruction,” Nembang said. Nepali Congress lawmaker Amresh Kumar Singh had said that the disruption violated democratic principles and press freedom. “On one hand there has been a deadlock in the constitution drafting process; on the other, attacks on press are happening,” Singh expressed his concern. He called on the government to make efforts to end the attacks on press. (PR)
