Eight killed in landslides, floods across country

Eight people were killed and one went missing in several incidents of landslides and floods in Sindhupalchok, Parbat and Syangja on Wednesday. Four members of a single family were killed when a landslide buried their house at Mahankal VDC-6 in Sindhupalchok on Wednesday.

The deceased--Dil Bahadur Tamang, his grandfather Man Bahadur, his six-year-old son Prashant and 13-year-old daughter Alisa--were sleeping at the time the disaster occurred, locals said. Dil Bahadur’s wife Moti, injured in the disaster, has been taken to Kathmandu for treatment, police said.

Meanwhile, the bodies of two people, who had gone missing after the landslide at Baramchi in Sindhupalchok on Monday, were recovered. With this, the death toll has reached five.

Likewise, three people were killed when a landslide buried a house belonging to Harilal Chapagain at Kushma-18 in Parbat on Wednesday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Harilal’s daughter Januka Poudel, granddaughters Jenika, 6, and four-year-old Khusbu. Police retrieved their bodies from the debris. Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahendra Kumar Shrestha said that they managed to rescue 58-year-old Putali from the rubble.

According to police, rescue teams from Nepal Police, Nepal Army and Armed Police Force were deployed to the site following the mishap.

Similarly, Urmila Shah, 14, was killed when a landslip buried the house of Bhadra Bahadur Shah at Putalibazaar-9 in Syangja.

In another incident of flood, Hasta Kumari Gharti, 60, has gone missing when Andhi stream swept her away at Waling in Syangja, police said. Gurung was a permanent resident of Rolpa.

The District Administration Office said that the flooded Setikhola and Andhikhola swept away around half a dozen houses downstream and have posed risks to a dozen more settlements in Wayarghari, Helu, Waling, Wayatari and Tallo Galyang bazaar.
