Gurung betters 400m medley nat’l record

Nepal Police Club (NPC) swimmer Sirish Gurung set a new 400m Individual Medley national record during the fourth NSA Cup Swimming Championships here on Tuesday.
Gurung swam the distance in 5:15.35 to better his own previous mark of 5:20.39 set during the same tournament last year. It was the NPC swimmer’s second national record in two days following his 100m freestyle record a day before. Gurung shattered the 25-year old 100m record with the timing of 58.55. Ananda Lepcha (58.84) had been holding the record since the 1989 SAF Games in Islamabad.
Gurung was rewarded with Rs 10,000 for setting the national records. Apart from the record-setting gold medal, Gurung also clinched the 200m freestyle title with the timing of 2:14.59 to round up the championships with a total of five gold medals.
Niharika Tuladhar of Lincoln School struck the women’s 200m backstroke gold in 3:16.81. Jayanta Prakash Gurung won the men’s 200m butterfly title with the timing of 3:04.49 while Aditi Dhital of Lincoln bagged the women’s 200m freestyle title, completing the race in 2:49.12.
Devesh Manandhar ended his campaign on a high with his sixth gold medal – four of them in Open category and rest in the age-group -- of the meet on Tuesday. Manandhar struck the men’s 100m backstroke gold in 1:19.71.
Sofia Shah got hold of women’s 100m freestyle gold, swimming the distance in 1:09.37 while Tribhuvan Army Club’s Sonira Bista won the women’s 50m breaststroke gold in 40.77. Armyman Kiran Karki clinched the men’s 50m breaststroke title with the timing of 35.45.
Gurung and Shah were adjudged the best swimmers of the year. Lincoln clinched the age-group team championship accumulating 42 points.
