TU directs IoE to suspend admission process

Sep 3, 2014-

The Tribhuvan University (TU) on Wednesday directed the Institute of Engineering (IoE) to suspend the admission process for its Bachelor’s programmes over the controversy of results of the entrance exam held last month.

The IoE has been dragged into controversy after it published the results of the entrance test twice altering the standings of the students who had passed. The TU has asked the office of the dean at the IoE to stop the admission process unless the truth behind the issue has been revealed.

A three-member committee led by Soorya Lal Amatya, former TU rector, has been formed to investigate the case. TU Vice-chancellor Hira Bahadur Maharjan said the committee has been directed to submit its findings within a week.

Various student unions had demanded the TU to investigate the matter and suspend the IoE officials.

Over 7,500 students had applied for the entrance test. On August 20, the IoE published the results in which around 3,000 students secured pass marks. Four days later, the results were re-published with alteration in rankings of the students.

The incident infuriated the students who blamed the IoE officials of defaming one of the top academic institutes in the country. The IoE authority has claimed that they had to publish the results twice because of some “technical errors”.
