350 tonnes of betel nuts seized in Rani
Sep 5, 2014-
A joint team of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority and the Revenue Investigation Office seized 25 trucks (around 350 tonnes) of betel nuts at Rani Customs in Biratnagar on Friday.
Based on complaints filed at the anti-graft body and the tax enforcement office that the betel nuts were being re-exported, the team confiscated the betel nuts belonging to Jhapa-based Nepal Supari Kheti Bikas Sanstha.
Supari Kheti Bikas Sanstha is one of the two associations of betel nut growers authorised by the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) to recommend for the issuance of the certificate of origin. Another one is Uttari Morang Supari Kheti Bikas Sanstha.
The joint team has collected samples from each truck, which will be tested to ascertain whether the betel nuts were domestic production. The team led by CIAA Under Secretary Madhav Subedi also seized documents related to betel nut exports. There is a trend of re-exporting betel nuts after importing them from third countries.
As only two organisations have been authorised to recommend for the issuance of the certificate of origin (CoO), seven others have also sought the FNCCI authorisation.
Earlier, the government had hiked the import duty on betel nuts to control growing re-exports of imported betel nuts. The duty was hiked to a flat Rs 45 per kg from earlier 30 percent customs duty.
