Sunkoshi flood: Traffic resumes on Kothe stretch
Sep 8, 2014-
Vehicular movement disrupted since early Sunday after flooding caused by a lake outburst on the Sunkoshi river resumed partially on Monday along the Kothe stretch of Araniko Highway.
Engineer Dasharath Yadav at Road Division Office, Charikot, said single lane movement was possible after some repair. The road has developed cracks at several places.
Water level at the lake formed by a disastrous landslide on August 2 stabilised on Monday. It is believed that the lake, having been drained 18 metres on Sunday, is still 20 to 25 metres deep.
Nearby settlements are still at risk as the water eroded the banks. Houses at the Jholunge settlement on the banks of the lake are threatened. Seventeen houses have been deserted as landslides occurred on the banks. Rumta and Dhuskun villages are also at risk. An alternative track opened by the Road Department was also damaged.
