Sep 14, 2014-
Foreign Minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey will travel to Maldives and Sri Lanka on Tuesday to invite the heads of state and government to attend the 18th Saarc Summit to be held in Kathmandu on November 22-27.
As a special envoy of Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, Pandey will travel to the Maldivian capital Male to meet President Abdulla Yameen to extend an invitation to attend the summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, said a senior Foreign Ministry official. The Maldives chairs the regional grouping. Pandey will also meet his Maldivian counterpart Dunya Maumoon.
Pandey will then reach Sri Lanka to invite President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the summit. Then he will join Prime Minister Koirala in the UAE on the way to New York. After returning from the United States following his participation in the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the minister will travel to Japan—a Saarc observer country—and other Saarc nations to extend invitations to the heads of government and state.
It is customary for the host country to send invites to member states ahead of a summit.
