Envoy nominees testify before House panel

Three ambassador nominees to Candada, France and Switzerland testified before the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) on Friday. They told the committee that if their appointments are confirmed, they would work towards strengthening Nepal’s bilateral and business ties with the countries they have been proposed for ambassador’s position.   

Kali Pokharel, the ambassador nominee to Canada, said he plans to promote Nepali exports which currently stands at Rs 90 million annually. Pokharel, who has also been recommended the diplomatic official to Cuba, also said that he would work towards expanding political relations between the two countries. Ambika Luitel, who has been nominated the head of the mission to France, said she would make efforts to increase the trade volume between France and Nepal and also promote high-level visits between the two countries. Luitel is also the honourary counsel for Greece and Portugal.

Dipak Dhital, who has been proposed for permanent representative to Geneva, Switzerland, said he would use his position to find the names of Nepalis maintaining undisclosed accounts in Swiss banks and push for settling the issues of Bhutanese refugees.

The committee is give its decision on Sunday. Hearing of the other three ambassador nominees-- Khagnath Adhikari, Amrit Rai and Yagya Bahadur Hamal-- is also scheduled on the same day.
