Temp teachers want equal pay
Sep 23, 2014-
The Temporary Teachers’ Struggle Committee on Tuesday padlocked the account sections of all the District Education Offices and Department of Education in the Capital demanding that they should be paid equal their permanent colleagues.
The committee started the protest against the government after the Ministry of Finance on Thursday decided not to release the increased salary to teachers appointed on temporary, contract and relief quota basis. The government in its annual budget had hiked the salary of all the government employees by 10 percent decided to provide additional monthly allowance of Rs 1,000. The ministry’s decision will deprive over 50,000 temporary teachers of the increased salary. Civil servants appointed on temporary and contract basis, however, will be getting the increased pay, clearly depicting the contradiction on the government’s policy.
“This is intolerable. It is our right to be paid like the permanent employees,” said Narayan Gautam, secretary of the Committee, adding the protest will continue until the discriminatory provision is scrapped.
Earlier, the MoF also refused to provide uniform allowance to temporary teachers and the university staffers. The struggle committee has also been staging relay hunger strike at Shantibatika in the Capital for 280 days demanding that an agreement reached with government which promises to give permanent status to the temporary teachers through internal competition.
