Murky water troubles Khandbari locals
Sep 24, 2014-
The locals of Khandbari, the district headquarters of Sankhuwasabha district, have been unable to use water from their taps for either consumption or household use as water mixed with sewage has been flowing through the taps due to the negligence of the concerned agencies. As a result, the locals have been compelled to deal with dirty water flowing through household taps for the past one month.
Although locals had requested the Khandbari Small Town Drinking Water Project to take the initiative to purify the water before distribution at a meeting held at the District Administration Office 15 days ago, it has been in vain. According to local Dipendra Karki of Khandbari-1, their repeated requests had fallen on deaf ears.
According to Rajiv Shrestha, owner of the local Venus Hotel, water coming through the pipelines were not fit even for washing dishes, let alone human consumption. Shrestha said that guests coming to the hotel asked for mineral water even to wash their hands as the water was too filthy. Although the project has hiked the water tariff to Rs 45 per thousand litres, it has done little to better the quality of the water. Owner of Sainik Hotel, Daktar Parajul, said that it was the responsibility of the project to purify the water from the river before distributing it to consumers. Meanwhile, the project in its clarification said that the waters had turned filthy as floods carried large amount of mud into the drinking water system.
