Foreign ministers from Saarc meet in New York

On the sideline of the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly, a meeting of Saarc Council of Ministers at foreign minister level convened in New York on Thursday.

The Informal Meeting of the Saarc Council of Ministers was hosted by Dunya Maumoon, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives as current chair of the Saarc.

As the host of the next Saarc Summit, Foreign Minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey updated the Saarc Council of Ministers on the substantive and logistics preparations made for the Summit to be held in Kathmandu in November end, according to a statement issued by Nepal’s Permanent Mission to United Nations, New York.

While opening the meeting, the chairperson of the council Maumoon highlighted the important initiatives taken by the Maldives in the implementation of the decisions of the 17th Saarc summit.

Addressing the meeting, Secretary General of the Saarc, Arjun Bahadur Thapa briefed the ministers about the status of the implementation of the important decisisons of the 35th session of the council of ministers held in the Maldives in Feburary.

He also apprised the ministers about the recommendations made by the 46th and 47th sessions of the programming committees held at

the Saarc Secretariat in August regarding the selective closure/merger of Saarc regional centers and Saarc engagement with observers respectively.

Following the presentation by the secretary general, according to the statement, the ministers deliberated upon several measures initiated by the countries in the implementation of the 17th summit decisions.

Since 2007, Saarc has been convening informal session of the Saarc council of ministers on the sidelines of the UNGA in New York.
