At least 27 killed in Doti bus accident

Oct 6, 2014-

At least 27 people were killed and about 60 others injured in a bus accident along the rural road at Chhatiwan VDC-5 in Doti district on Monday. Nineteen of the injured are said to be in critical condition.

The Dhangadhi-bound passenger bus (Na 3 Kha 5707) swerved off the road and fell some 250 metres down at Kathpati, said police. The ill-fated vehicle that left from Jorayal in Doti was carrying passengers beyond its capacity. Most of the passengers were returning home after observing the Dashain festival with families.

Police Inspector Uddav Bhatta in Doti told the Post over phone that 15 of the dead have been identified. The death toll, according to Bhatta, could rise as it was suspected that some bodies might be lying under the vehicle.

“The rescue work is underway. It is still not clear how many people were on board when the incident took place,” said Bhatta, adding that a huge number of security personnel and the local people were involved in rescue efforts. The rescue work has been affected due to the rain in the area.

The incident site is about 150 km from Dipayal, the district headquarters of Doti. It is located 15 km from the Budar section along Bhimdutta Highway.

“We are yet to receive the detailed information about the incident as the accident site is located in the remote area,” said Bhatta.

In-charge of Area Police Office in Budar Dan Singh Karki, who was involved in the rescue mission, informed that 37 injured were rescued and taken to Budar for treatment. Preparations are on to send the seriously injured to Dhangadhi in Kailali district, he added.

Meanwhile, 19 people were injured, three critically, when a microbus met with an accident at Sangla-4 in Kathmandu on Sunday evening. The vehicle was heading to Kathmandu from Trishuli. The injured were taken to various hospitals in the Capital for treatment.
