PU appointment draws criticism
Oct 30, 2014-
The recent appointment of Anjaya Kumar Yadav as an officer at the Purbanchal University has sparked criticism from within the institution.
According to a university source, Anjaya Kumar, who is said to be a relative of Education Minister Chitra Lekha Yadav, was appointed by the Vice chancellor of the university Shirish Rijal. The source added that the appointment was made without consent from the university executive council and failed to make a public notice on the decision. Anjaya Kumar was handed the appointment letter on Monday, allowing him to work from Friday.
A university employee, who is a representative of the university Employees’ Union, said that Rijal told them that the appointment was made under pressure from the minister. Rijal also told that he was not aware of the family ties between Anjaya Kumar and Education Minister Yadav, and that Anjaya Kumar was appointed as an assistant of the dean of medical faculty of the university on a contract basis.
Following a case filed by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority on charge of their involvement in funds embezzlement six months ago, half a dozen university staff including former vice chancellor Maheshwor Man Shrestha and registrar Niroj Pandey were suspended. Rijal was then appointed as the vice chancellor.
University staffs have said that they are preparing to launch a protest programme denouncing the appointment.
