India to offer 8 bullet proof cars
- SAARC preparations
Oct 31, 2014-
Indian government has agreed to provide eight armoured BMW cars to be used during the upcoming 18th Saarc Summit without labelling a charge, said Khaganath Adhikari, spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). These vehicles will be used by VIP or head of the states and governments of the eight member states and returned to India once the summit is over.
Importing the bullet proof and other medium range vehicles for the summit had become a headache to the authorities concerned and the government was planning to hire them from private rental companies in India.
The government, meanwhile, is hiring other 32 medium range BMW and Mercedes Benz cars from India for the summit. These vehicles will be used by spouses of the visiting head of the states/governments and foreign ministers. Similarly, the government is also purchasing another 20 vehicles for the summit from Hyundai Company. The MoFA has already initiated a process to purchase these vehicles through the competitive bidding process.
The government needs another 60-70 medium and low range vehicles and these arrangements will be made internally, Adhikari said. “The officials have been inspecting the conditions of vehicles currently being used by senior government officials. We hope once the inspection will be over, the task of vehicles management will be completed,” he said.
Deputy Prime Ministers Bam Dev Gautam and Prakash Man Singh will receive the head of the states/governments at the Tribhuvan International Airport. Other visiting guests will be received by Cabinet ministers, state ministers and senior government officials.
The government is also seeking an alternative to Nagarkot for the retreat of head of the states/governments on November 27. If weather does not permit to fly from Kathmandu to Nagarkot, Gokarna Resort will probably be chosen as an alternative venue, an official said.
