Preparations for the upcoming Saarc Summit are underway at full pace. With less than three weeks remaining for the jamboree, the ongoing city renovation and beautification project is expected to be completed shortly, Foreign Minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey said in a press briefing organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Capital on Tuesday.

“I have been in constant touch with Physical Infrastructure Minister Bimalendra Nidhi since his ministry is overseeing the preparation works for the Saarc Summit. And he has assured me that all works will be completed within 10 days,” said Minister Pandey.

If there are any shortcomings or weaknesses regarding the preparation works, Pandey said the government will try to improve on those areas when the country gets to host another Saarc Summit. Nepal is hosting the 18th edition of South Asian regional gathering for the third time, which will kick off on November 22.

If the Summit amends the preset Saarc charter, the regional meeting will be held in an interval of two years, and Nepal will have the chance to play the role of host nation after 16 years.

Meanwhile, the government has already booked the hotels and venue retreat for the visiting dignitaries. The foreign minister Pandey said the heads of the state/government will stay at Crowne Plaza Hotel Kathmandu Soaltee, along with senior officials from the seven member states. Similarly, the delegates representing the observer nations will stay at Hotel Yak & Yeti. The government will also set up a dedicated media centre at Hotel Radisson.

“We have made arrangement for daily press briefing, and after concluding the summit, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala will hold a press meet for national and international media,” said Minister Pandey.

Deputy prime ministers, Prakash Man Singh and Bam Dev Gautam, will receive the visiting heads of the state/government upon their arrival in Kathmandu, and two female Cabinet ministers--Education Minister Chitra Lekha Yadav and Energy Minister Radha Gyawali-- will receive them at the hotel. Physical Infrastructure Minister Nidhi will receive Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Janakpur. Minister for Information and Communication Minendra Rijal will receive the heads of the sate/government at the retreat venue in Dhulikhel.

On November 27, President Ram Baran Yadav will host a dinner reception for all heads of the state/government at his Sheetal Niwas residence. Prime Minister Sushil Koirala will also host a party for the visiting guests on November 26. “We are also planning to take the heads of the state and government on a mountain flight and give them tour of some cultural sites,” Minister Pandey said.
