Sujata picked as first lady
Nov 11, 2014-
Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has picked senior Nepali Congress leader and former deputy prime minister and minister for Foreign Affairs Sujata Koirala as the first lady for the 18th Saarc Summit.
Koriala had proposed her name during a meeting on Sunday, Foreign Affairs Minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey said. Sujata and Sushil are relatives. She had also stood as first lady when her father late Girija Prasad Koirala was Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister’s decision to pick her as first lady also demonstrated his bid to manage the internal politics, especially related to the Koirala family, of Nepali Congress. At present, she is party Central Working Committee member and chief of Foreign Department of the party.
“She will act as first lady during the summit, assist the PM in receiving and welcoming the heads of state and government at official and non-official programmes,” said Dinesh Bhattarai, the PM’s foreign relations adviser. Usually, the spouse or immediate sibling of the head of state or government is considered as first lady but officials say this new arrangement has been made as PM Koirala is single.
