Two days off in Valley for Saarc Summit
Nov 13, 2014-
The government has declared two days of public holiday in Kathmandu Valley on November 26 and 27 for the 18th Saarc Summit.
A Cabinet meeting on Thursday took the decision, as recommended by Home Ministry. Schools and colleges, however, will close for four days from November 25 to 28.
The decision is said to have been taken for security reasons and traffic management when the eight heads of state or government and senior officials from Saarc member states go around several places in the Valley including a retreat in Dhulikhel on its outskirts.
More than 350 guests from member states and nine observer countries will be arriving in Kathmandu. “There would be huge traffic relocation for their movement,” said Laxmi Prasad Dhakal, spokesman for the Home Ministry.
Besides, only half the total number of vehicles will be allowed to ply on a given day for five days. From November 24 to 28, vehicles will be restricted on the basis of odd or even registration numbers, corresponding with the odd or even date.
The meeting also entrusted Foreign Minister Mahendra Bahadur Pandey to sign three regional agreements for Nepal during the summit. Saarc Motor Vehicle Agreement, Saarc Framework Agreement on Energy Cooperation, and Saarc Railway Agreement will be signed in the presence of the visiting heads of state/government, said Minendra Rijal, Minister for Information and Communications.
