Security rehearsal for guests’ retreat

A security rehearsal, named ‘Walk Through Talk Through’, was staged in Bhaktapur on Friday morning as part of preparations for the sightseeing tour of South Asian delegates during the upcoming Saarc Summit. The dignitaries are scheduled to visit Unesco heritage sites--Durbar Square and Taumadi Square--in the district.
Officials from Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police visited the area and inquired about the security situation. They were briefed by Chief District Officer Anil Kumar Thakur and other government officials.
According to security source, 700 personnel from Nepal police and around 400 from Armed Police Force will be deployed at 95 different stops from the Monahora river to Bhaktapur Durbar Square during the delegates’ sightseeing tour. Nepal Army personnel are also scheduled to be deployed.
Sujata Koirala, Nepali Congress leader and former deputy prime minister who will carry out roles of the first lady during the summit, will be escorting other first ladies and guests to the area.
Meanwhile, Bhaktapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) and Bhaktapur Industrial District Management Office are organising an exhibition showcasing local products, including wood carving, handicraft, pashmina, Thanka paintings, CCI Programme Officer Rajan Dhaubhadel said.
As part of the rehearsal, Devi Naach, a traditional dance performed during the Gai Jatra and Indra Jatra festivals, was staged for half an hour at Taumadi Square.
Local authorities said entrance passes will be provided to all local shop owners but no public vehicle will be allowed to enter the area from 7 in the morning to 12 in the afternoon when the Saarc delegates will be visiting the area. The Bhaktapur Municipality with support from police and local residents is also going to organise a clean-up campaign at Sallaghari.
Mangala Pradhan, chief of the Durbar Management Office, said almost all renovation and beautification works in the area have been completed.
