Reckless driver in custody

The District Court in Makwanpur has remanded Rakesh Singh Syangtan, whose reckless driving cost 10 lives in an accident at Basamadi on the East-West Highway in the district on November 1, into custody.

A single bench of Judge Dipendra Adhikari gave the verdict on Friday against 31-year-old Syangtan, a resident of Hetauda-15. Police had filed a murder case against the driver two days after the accident. The accused will face jail term of 2-10 years, as per the existing legal provisions, if proven guilty.

Ten people, including a Russian national, were killed and dozens others were injured when two passenger buses collided head-on at Basamadi-2. Police claim that the Biratnagar-bound Subhashree bus collided with Metro Deluxe en route to Kathmandu from Ilam.
