Heating appliance sales jump as mercury falls
Dec 14, 2014-
As the winter sets in, sales of heaters and gas geysers have jumped in the Valley.
People are rushing to buy new variants of heating appliances in bazaars like Ason and Mahaboudha.
Some of the major brands selling heaters and gas geysers include CG, Hilltake, Yasuda, Aftek, Electron and LGT. Most of them are imported from countries like India, China, Malaysia, Korea and Thailand.
“The Kathmandu valley and other parts of the country are witnessing a significant fall in temperature. So the sales of heaters and geysers have picked up,” said Ishwor Dangol, proprietor of Ishwor Store. “I am selling 10-12 gas geysers and heaters daily these days.” Gas geysers available with Ishwor Store are priced between Rs 3,800 and Rs 6,500, while heater prices range from Rs 800 to Rs 12,000.
“Heating appliances like gas geysers come in handy during the extreme weather conditions as solar systems do not work due to the lack of sunlight.
So there is increasing demand from households, offices and students,” said Bikash Maharjan, proprietor of Ganapati Store. The store sells gas geysers in six- and eight-litre capacities, priced between Rs 3,500 and Rs 8,000.
Soni Shrestha, sales executive at Hilltake Gas Geysers, said they were witnessing a substantial growth in sales in recent days. “The chilly weather is encouraging people to buy gas geysers as they provide hot water instantly,” she said, adding an LPG cylinder lasts for the entire winter season for a family of five.
The company sells two models of gas geysers priced between Rs 6,500 and Rs 7,500. Besides, traders said immersion rods, electric kettles and vacuum flasks are also flying off the shelves. “Immersion rods that can heat water within 15-30 minutes are basically preferred by students and low-income families as they are cost effective,” said a trader at Mahaboudha. Prices of immersion rods start from Rs 250.
