Drawing for awareness on captive elephants
Jan 12, 2015-
About four dozen students participated in a drawing competition on the elephant theme in Chitwan on Sunday. The event was organised at Shree Malpur Secondary School in collaboration with Animal Rights Club, US Embassy Youth Council and YUWA as part of an awareness campaign for the welfare of captive elephants in Chitwan.
Supported by Animal Nepal, the theme of the contest was ‘Hatti Mero Sathi’ (elephant my friend). Forty-four students from classes 4 to 10 drew images of the pachyderms.
“It has become essential to work for the welfare of captive elephants because they are now small in number. If we don’t take steps to conserve them, they will soon be on the verge of extinction,” said Aneesha Pokharel, the programme coordinator.
