Cremation site workers halt service

Jan 13, 2015-

Workers at the cremation site in Pashupati Aryaghat have opposed the decision of the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) to operate its own shop to sell cremation-related paraphernalia. They have halted cremation service, accusing the PADT of stealing the business that they have been operating for years.

The PADT has opened its own shop that sells articles required during cremation process at subsidised rates.

The workers have asked the PADT to scrap the registration permits issued to the shops that purvey items used during cremation. Besides, they have also demanded lowering the “environment cost” from Rs 3,200 to Rs 200 charged during the cremation, identity cards, accident insurance and retirement fund.

For those doing night shift, the workers have demanded accommodation. They have also demanded the PADT add 10 percent to their deducted provident fund amount and job security, even after the operation of electric crematorium.

PADT Member Secretary Gobinda Tandon said they were tying to solve the issues and resume the cremation services at the earliest. “We are in talks with the workers. We hope to find a solution soon,” he said.
