Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has directed the ward office to collect the details of tax defaulters and also identify potential tax payers who have been operating their business in the Capital. As soon as the details of the tax defaulters is acquired, the metropolis plans to charge the defaulters.

According to Mahesh Kafle, revenue department chief at the KMC, they plan to start their campaign against the defaulters within next week. “Right now we have been busy identifying the defaulters, which include many big corporate houses,” said Kafle. “We have also made correspondence with these big businesses urging them to clear their taxes.”

The metropolis has blacklisted hundreds of business entities that have defied numerous requests to pay taxes. Last year the metropolis made an extravagant collection of Rs 500 million from business, house and rent taxes. This year too the KMC has targeted a similar collection to strengthen its internal source.

In the campaign last year, the KMC had charged several private entities that included commercial buildings, hotels and other businesses. The businesses were padlocked and temporarily relieved off metropolis’ basic services.
