A 21-year-old woman has barely managed to escape from being a rape victim in the remote Dahakhani VDC in Chitwan. According to police, a group of three youths had attempted to gang-rape her after breaking into her house on Thursday night.

The woman managed to escape with minor injuries as the perpetrators fled the scene soon after neigbours and villagers rushed out of their houses upon hearing the victim scream for help. However, locals not only foiled the rape attempt, but also managed to nab the perpetrators and handed them over to the police.

Police identified the perpetrators who attempted to gang-rape the woman as Lal Bahadur Chepang, 20, of Shaktikhor-4, Durga Gurung, 19, and Sujan Gurung, 18, of Chandibhanjyang-7. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajan Adhikari of the District Police Office, Sujan had sustained injuries in his legs while trying to flee.

Stating that the three youths will be charged with attempted rape, Adhikari said that they had started further investigation into the matter after taking the three into custody.

The victim, who is also a mother of a small child, had been living alone in the house as her husband, who is a migrant worker, is currently abroad. The trio had sneaked into the victim’s house taking advantage of the situation.

According to Sabitri Sapkota of Insec, single women, especially those who are physically weak and who belong to economically deprived families, are vulnerable to rape. Likewise, police said these kinds of crimes are usually committed under the influence of alcohol.

Over the past year, 19 girls under the age of 14 have fallen victim to rape in the district. Police said that they had successfully managed to solve 37 out of 38 cases of rape registered over the course of the year.
