Ani secures third spot

KATHMANDU: Nepali lawn tennis player Ani Mathema secured third spot in the ITF Asian Division 2 Junior U-14 Tennis Championship in Vietnam on Friday. Mathema beat Natasha Menerawara of Sri Lanka 6-4, 7-5 in the third-place match. In the boys’ category, Samrakshyak Bhusan Bajracharya finished third after beating Silvia Aahhen of Sri Lanka 6-1, 6-2. The duo of Ani and Ira Raut went down -4, 3-6, 10-8 against Sri Lankan pair Macau in the semi-finals. (PR)  

Thapa completes Three Star move

LALITPUR: National team skipper Sagar Thapa completed his move to Three Star Club on Friday. Thapa, who had been without a club since parting ways with Manang Marshyangadi, signed a four-month contract with the club. Three Star unveiled a 20-member squad for the National League on Friday. The 2012 A division League champions take on Morang FC on Sunday. The other squad members include Saroj Dahal, Sandip Rai, Alen Neupane, Kiran Chemjong, Bishnu Sunar, Bijay Dhimal, Jagjeet Shrestha, Bikram Lama, Nirajan Khadka, Bijay Gurung, Prakash Budhathoki, Bishnu Gurung, Asim Jung Karki, Victor, Elvies, Rajin Dhimal, Santosh Sahukhala, Surendra Gurung and Amar Dangol. Sikshyadeep, Orchid in semis

BIRATNAGAR: Sikshya deep sidelined Bhanu College by nine wickets to book a semi-final of berth in cricket during the sixth Hissan Morang Sports Meet here on Friday. In the other match, Orchid registered eight-wicket win over Birat Science to join Sikshyadeep in the last four. In football, Araniko and Siddhartha advanced to the quarter-finals. Araniko beat Pathivara 2-1 and Siddhartha edged Lord Buddha 4-2 in penalty shootout. In Volleyball, Pathivara defeated Greenland College and Maryland to confirm a quarter-final berth. (PR)   

Neric, Greenfield enter last four

KATHMANDU: Hosts Neric Academy and Greenfield entered the semi-finals of the fourth Neric Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Friday. In the senior boys’ quarter-finals, Neric edged Heartland 24-20 and Greenfield saw off People’s Academy 36-26. Radiant and Greenwich also advanced to the semi-finals.  Radiant registered a 31-30 win over Deneb and Greenwich beat Gyan Niketan 40-38. In the junior boys’ quarter-finals, Neric ‘A’ dispatched Heartland 27-20 and Neric B ousted East Pole 15-12. (PR)

Nat’l taekwondo begins Tuesday

KATHMANDU: The fourth National Taekwondo Championship is set to kick off  here at the National Sports Council premises from Tuesday. In all, 140 players from seven teams—five development regions, University team and national School of Taekwondo Federation—will vie for 20 goal medals in the two-day event, informed the organisers National Taekwondo Union on Friday.
